Bombshells with The Penelopiad
The Australian idiom is explored in this dynamic presentation of poetry and song. Couched in an historical narrative that moves from the transportation era to the present this collection of Australian voices express a variety of experiences both linguistically and culturally.
Unit 4 Area of Study 1 – Reading and comparing texts
Pairing 6: Bombshells by Joanna Murray-Smith and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
by exclusive arrangement with Joanna Murray-Smith
Monologues from Bombshells are compared and contrasted with passages from The Penelopiad in a performance that helps students gain a deeper understanding of the ideas, issues and themes of both texts.
The varied voices and writing styles of the play and novel give us an excellent opportunity to examine the similarities and differences in perspectives and values.
In this performance and consider the role of women from contrasting periods, conventional stereotypes and the realities of women’s lives, and how self-analysis and the inner world compares with the demands and responses to the outer world.
